For me, cinnamon rolls are a childhood memory. My mom made homemade ones once or twice, but more often she popped open a can of Pillsbury cinnamon rolls and baked them on Saturday morning.
My sister and I would battle over who got the middle one since she always baked them in a round cake pan, leaving a single extra-gooey roll in the center. Then there was Cinnabon at the mall, a rare special treat that wafted to you from several stores down.
As an adult, I don’t get to eat a cinnamon roll as often as I’d like. There’s just my husband and I, so making a whole homemade tray of rolls feels unreasonable and irrational. Even a tube of Pillsbury is a bit much.
But individually-wrapped frozen cinnamon rolls that go in the microwave? Now that’s my speed! I recently discovered Sunshine Buns at Costco, which delivers a warm, perfectly sweet cinnamon roll in record time. Instant gratification.

Why You Need To Try Sunshine Buns at Costco
Costco just started carrying Sunshine Buns, a Utah-based brand that offers a few different flavors of fully baked, flash-frozen cinnamon rolls. They’re based on the owner’s grandmother’s recipe, and are individually wrapped and ready to pop in the microwave. Costco currently offers the original cinnamon flavor with cream cheese frosting, and each bag contains 10 rolls.
My cinnamon roll cravings tend to strike at inopportune moments, so Sunshine Buns has become my go-to solution. I can grab one out of the freezer, stick it in the microwave for 45 seconds, add the frosting, and chow down on a warm, gooey cinnamon roll right then and there. Whether it’s a lazy Saturday morning, an afternoon pick-me-up with coffee, or a late-night dessert, these cinnamon rolls are there for me.
In terms of texture, this is a gooey cinnamon roll. It’s perfect for me and my sister, who always wanted that center roll, but if you like your cinnamon rolls really bready, then it might not be for you. The microwave manages to keep it nice and soft without making it tough (as long as you follow the directions). And who doesn’t like cream cheese frosting? It’s creamy, just sweet enough, and without any chemical aftertaste I find in some store-bought cinnamon rolls.
Sunshine Buns are in stock right now at my local SoCal Costco. If you don’t find them in your local Costco, keep checking, as they could pop up in the freezer aisle any time. And don’t forget that you can request new items at your local Costco!
