Organic Applesauce Recalled Over Elevated Levels of Mold Toxin

Wakefern Food Corp. recalled select Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce on September 14 after routine FDA testing found elevated levels of patulin, a toxin produced by molds that grow on damaged or bruised apples. Wakefern says the affected product shouldn’t be eaten because the patulin level exceeds food-safety limits. No illnesses have been reported to date.

  • Product: Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce, 23-ounce plastic jar

  • Best-by date: June 16, 2027

The applesauce was sold through Wakefern’s ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage, and Fairway Market banners. The company hasn’t specified which states or individual stores received the recalled jars.

If you have a jar matching the UPC and best-by date above, don’t eat it. Throw it away or return it to the store of purchase for a refund. Direct questions to 1-800-ShopRite (1-800-746-7748), Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Potato Chips Recalled Over Undeclared Soy

On September 16, Saratoga Potato Chips recalled two lots of its J. HIGGS Loaded Bacon and Cheddar Potato Chips after discovering the bags may contain undeclared soy. People with a soy allergy or severe sensitivity face a risk of a serious or life-threatening reaction if they eat the recalled chips. No illnesses have been reported to date, and no other J. HIGGS products or flavors are affected.

  • Product: J. HIGGS Loaded Bacon and Cheddar Potato Chips, 7.75-ounce bag

  • Best-by dates: December 11, 2026, or December 18, 2026 (marked on the top right corner of the bag)

The chips were distributed to Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Maryland and sold at Save A Lot stores.

If you have a bag matching the UPC and best-by dates above, don’t eat it. Instead, toss it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. For questions, contact Saratoga Potato Chips at 1-260-969-0066.

167,000 Pounds of Raw Meat Recalled Over False USDA Inspection Mark

On September 22, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a recall by Star Meat Delivery Inc. of about 167,639 pounds of raw pork, beef, and goat products. FSIS found that the items were produced without federal inspection and bore a false USDA mark.

FSIS classified this as a Class I recall, its most serious designation, since eating the products could cause serious health consequences. No illnesses have been reported to date.

  • False establishment number: EST. 1363

  • Produced: On various dates before September 22, 2026

Individual packages may not have this exact labeling, as some retail stores apply their own stickers with pricing and safe handling instructions.

The recalled meat was shipped to A&D Foods, a Georgia distributor, for further distribution to retailers and restaurants nationwide. At this point, FSIS hasn’t named any specific stores or restaurants associated with the recall, but this story will be updated if and when that information becomes available. FSIS will also update the recall list on its website.

If you have any of these products, don’t eat them. Throw them away, even if you’re not sure whether your specific cut is on the list, because FSIS may still add items to the recall list. If you’re concerned about illness, contact a healthcare provider.

If you have food safety questions, you can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6845) or email [email protected].
