I’ll Never Buy Expensive Mayo Again—This Cheaper Brand Is Better

My brother used to say he was allergic to mayonnaise. He wasn’t—he just didn’t like it. This frustrated my mom because she often made us mayo-based salads for lunch. That meant no more ham salad, no more tuna salad, and certainly not bologna salad (yeah, I ate that). I didn’t feel one way or another about mayonnaise then, so it was all fine with me.

Flash forward to adulthood, and it turns out my brother has “matured out of” his mayo allergy, while I now feel a very certain way about mayonnaise. I’ve tried them all (or at least most of them), and the cost-effective version sold at Aldi is my favorite.

Aldi Burman’s Real Mayonnaise

  • Price: $3.19 for a 30-ounce jar

  • Why I Love It: This budget-friendly mayo has a subtle tangy flavor and just-creamy-enough texture that makes it versatile to use in all types of dishes.

Why I Love Aldi’s Burman’s Real Mayonnaise

You might already have a favorite mayonnaise, and I think that’s awesome. Please continue to use and enjoy that mayonnaise, but if you’re open to another option, I recommend Aldi’s brand, also known as Burman’s Real Mayonnaise.

In recent years, the word “basic” has come to imply that something is simple and uninteresting, but I don’t think of it that way when I use it to describe this mayonnaise. Instead, “basic” means “universally compatible.” And that means this mayonnaise goes with everything.

Thanks to its mostly neutral flavor that’s complemented by a subtle tanginess and salinity, it’s just as delicious as a condiment on your favorite sandwich or as the base of your next batch of green goddess salad dressing.

It also has the perfect creamy-but-not-too-creamy texture. Some people might disagree with me, but I don’t like ultra-thick mayonnaise. If it can stand up on its own without support, that just doesn’t feel right to me. Instead, I’m after a mayo that’s smooth and creamy, but won’t coat my mouth, and Burman’s is just that. The consistency is substantial enough to hold up to bread but isn’t so heavy that it devours my chopped hard-boiled eggs in egg salad.

Finally, the price is right. At just around $3 for a 30-ounce jar (that’s $0.11 per serving!), you can’t beat the price tag. Most other name-brand mayos clock in at double that cost, and with the current price of groceries, every penny counts!

Fans of inexpensive, but delicious food rejoice because Aldi has you covered when it comes to an economical, tasty, and versatile jar of mayonnaise. Its appealing texture and flavor make it an ideal spread, but I also think it’s great for using in a variety of salads and dressings. You don’t have to give up your favorite mayo, but try a bit of Burman’s, and you might be convinced to swap.
